Special Patrol Insertion/Extraction (SPIE) Ropes
Special Patrol Insertion/Extraction (SPIE) Ropes are designed for rapid and efficient insertion or extraction of personnel in situations where landing is not possible. Made in accordance with drawings 829 AS 201-1, these ropes feature 10 D-ring attachment points and come in two variations: a 120-foot natural color rope with a clear abrasion-resistant coating, and a 150-foot black rope with a black abrasion-resistant coating. Both versions provide reliable performance and safety during operations.
Key Features
- Length Options: Available in 120 FT (natural color) and 150 FT (black)
- High-Strength D-Rings: Each rope features 10 D-rings, proof tested at 2500 lbf for secure attachment of personnel
- Durability: Ropes are coated with abrasion-resistant nylon solutions; 120 FT with clear coating, 150 FT with black coating
- Strength: Entire SPIE rope is proof tested at 10,000 lbf, with a braided eye splice strength of 29,000 lbf
- Tapered Eye Splices: Both ends feature encapsulated tapered eye splices for secure helicopter attachment
Product Description
SPIE Ropes are built to meet the rigorous demands of military and tactical operations. Designed for rapid insertion and extraction, these ropes provide a reliable and efficient solution for personnel deployment in areas where landing is not possible. The ropes come with ten high-strength D-rings, spaced strategically for optimal attachment and safety.

Safety and Inspection
The SPIE system is inspected by a qualified HRST master every six months or when serviceability is questioned, with all inspections documented in the rope log book. Units using the SPIE system must comply with service life limitations as specified in NAVAIR 13-45-2, Special Patrol Insertion/Extraction (SPIE) System.
Operational Warnings
- Body Armor: Ensure body armor used does not interfere with harness to avoid choking hazards. Use body armor with a cut-away section below the neck for SPIE operations.
- MILES Harness: Do not wear a MILES harness during helicopter operations involving ropes, ladders, hoists, or flotation devices.
- Rope Deployment: Deploy the rope only when the aircraft is stabilized directly over the objective for exfiltration.
- Static Electricity: Allow the rope to contact water before personnel to discharge any static electricity during water operations.
Applications
SPIE ropes are ideal for rough terrain and water extraction operations, ensuring personnel can be safely and quickly inserted or extracted from challenging environments.
